Kumar Roy

Born: 1 January 1926

Kumar Roy (1926–2010) was a legendary figure in Bengali theatre who brilliantly bridged the worlds of acting, direction, and playwriting. Born in Dinajpur, Bangladesh, he built an impressive career that culminated in him receiving the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1983—a recognition of his immense contribution to Indian performing arts. Roy was a cornerstone member of the influential Bohurupee theatre group and left an indelible mark through his visionary direction, most notably with his 1989 recreation of the groundbreaking play Nabanna (1948), which remains a cornerstone of Bengali theatrical history. Beyond his stage triumphs, Kumar Roy was deeply invested in nurturing the next generation of theatre artists as a professor of drama at Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata and a visiting professor at Sangeet Bhavan in Santiniketan. From 2006 until his death in 2010, he served as president of the PashchimBanga Natya Akademi (West Bengal State Theatre Academy), where he shaped the institutional direction of regional theatre. His legacy extends far beyond Bollywood—Roy was instrumental in establishing Bengali theatre as a powerful artistic force, combining intellectual rigor with emotional depth in a way that influenced generations of performers and reinforced the profound connection between classical art forms and contemporary expression.
