Keshto Mukherjee

Keshto Mukherjee

Born: 7 August 1905

Keshto Mukherjee was a comedy legend who carved out a unique niche in Hindi cinema during its golden age, becoming absolutely iconic for his portrayal of comic drunk characters that had audiences rolling in the aisles. Born in Kolkata in 1925, he brought a distinctive style to the screen that made even the smallest roles memorable. Beyond Bollywood, Mukherjee shared a deep creative bond with the legendary director Ritwik Ghatak, appearing in several of his masterpieces including Bari Theke Paliye, Ajantrik, Nagarik, and Jukti Takko Aar Gappo—films that cemented his place in Indian cinema history. What made Keshto special was his ability to steal scenes with just a look or a gesture, turning what could've been throwaway comic relief into genuine art. He had this uncanny talent for bringing depth and humanity to characters who could've easily been one-dimensional, whether he was playing a trickster, a madman, or a drunk stumbling through the frame. His contribution went beyond just making people laugh; he helped establish the comedic vernacular of Hindi cinema while also proving that character actors could be just as essential as the leads. Though his career spanned a relatively brief period before his death in 1982, Keshto Mukherjee left an indelible mark that still resonates with cinema lovers today.
