Kanu Roy
Born: 9 December 1912
Kanu Roy was a versatile talent who spent decades straddling the worlds of acting and music composition in Hindi and Bengali cinema. Born in 1912, he carved out a solid career despite starting from humble beginnings, taking whatever small acting roles he could land in Mumbai while simultaneously building his reputation as a composer. His real breakthrough came as a music director, particularly through his prolific collaboration with filmmaker Basu Bhattacharya, where he delivered some genuinely unforgettable compositions that became the backbone of several cult classics. What really set Kanu Roy apart was his gift for crafting deeply emotional melodies that showcased the finest singers of his era. He had an exceptional ear for pairing his compositions with the right vocalists—his work with Geeta Dutt remains legendary, from the haunting "Aaj ki kaali ghata" in Uski Kahani to the poignant songs in her final film Anubhav, where he delivered some of her most touching performances. Beyond Geeta Dutt, he lent his compositional genius to other celebrated artists like Manna Dey and Bhupinder Singh, creating tracks that have aged beautifully. While not every film he touched became a blockbuster, the sheer quality of his music ensured that Kanu Roy left an indelible mark on Bollywood's golden era, proving that longevity in cinema often trumps fleeting commercial success.
