Gufi Paintal

Gufi Paintal

Born: 4 October 1944

Gufi Paintal had one of those careers that proved acting wasn't always Plan A—but it sure became his calling. Originally an engineer, he caught the acting bug while serving in the Indian Army during the Sino-Indian War, performing in a Ramlila folk play that sparked his passion for the craft. He made his way to Bombay in 1969 and quickly became a fixture in Indian cinema and television, working as an assistant director, model, and actor across numerous projects. But let's be real: Paintal will forever be remembered as Mama Shakuni in B.R. Chopra's legendary Mahabharat adaptation, a role he himself considered his finest work. He became so inseparable from the scheming uncle that he even hosted a political discussion show on Sahara Samay entirely in character as Shakuni—talk about leaving a mark. Beyond the iconic role that defined a generation's Sunday mornings, Paintal proved himself a multi-talented artist who wore many hats throughout his career. He worked as a casting director, bringing his keen eye for talent to various productions, and even directed the devotional film Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. His influence on Bollywood extended right up until his death in 2023, including his work as head of facility at the Abbhinnay Acting Academy, where he mentored the next generation of performers. Paintal's legacy isn't just about one character—it's about a craftsman who shaped Indian television and film from multiple angles, leaving behind a body of work that spans acting, directing, and nurturing talent for over four decades.
