Gita Dey
Born: 5 August 1931
Gita Dey, lovingly known as Gita Maa, was a legendary figure in Indian cinema whose career spanned seven decades of pure artistry. Born in Kolkata in 1931, she became a stage performer at just six years old and transitioned to films in 1943, appearing as a child actress in Ahuti. Over her remarkable lifetime, she acted in more than 200 Bengali films and performed in over 2,000 stage shows, making her one of the most prolific actors in Indian cinema. She worked with some of cinema's greatest directors, including Satyajit Ray in Teen Kanya and collaborated with masters like Ritwik Ghatak on iconic films such as Meghe Dhaka Tara, Subarnarekha, and Komal Gandhar. Her contributions weren't limited to the silver screen—she was deeply involved with All India Radio, creating memorable Shruti Nataks (audio dramas) that touched millions of listeners. Gita Dey's influence on Bengali cinema was immeasurable, and she brought authenticity and emotional depth to every role she undertook, whether in experimental art films or mainstream productions. Even in her later years, she remained active, appearing in Hindi films like Parineeta alongside Vidya Balan and Sanjay Dutt, proving her versatility transcended language barriers. Her dedication to theatre, film, and radio drama earned her the Presidential Award for Lifetime Achievement from former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, along with numerous accolades throughout her life. When she passed away in 2011, Indian cinema lost a true custodian of theatrical tradition and an irreplaceable talent who had graced the stage and screen for nearly 70 years.
