Farooq Sheikh

Farooq Sheikh

Born: 25 March 1948

Farooq Sheikh was a class act who built his career on choosing roles with substance over star power. Active from 1973 onwards, he became a cornerstone of parallel cinema, collaborating with visionary directors like Satyajit Ray, Muzaffar Ali, and Hrishikesh Mukherjee during his most prolific years. While he stepped back from films in the '90s to focus on television and theater, Sheikh proved he had plenty left in the tank when he returned to cinema in 2008. His crowning moment came in 2010 when he bagged the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for Lahore—a well-deserved recognition of his decades-long commitment to meaningful cinema. What made Farooq Sheikh special was his understated, naturalistic style that stood in sharp contrast to the over-the-top theatrics of mainstream Bollywood. He was a thinking actor's actor, deeply invested in roles that challenged him rather than ones that just looked good on screen. Beyond films, he showed his versatility by hosting the beloved TV show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai and performing in stage productions like Tumhari Amrita alongside Shabana Azmi. Though his filmography from his final years was selective, his work remained impactful, proving that Farooq Sheikh's influence on Hindi cinema extended far beyond box office numbers—he was an institution of integrity in an industry that doesn't always value it.
